The proliferation of more arms by criminals was halted, on Sunday, by police operatives from Monitoring Unit in Oyo State Police Command, as they intercepted an AK-47 rifle from a suspected gunrunner at Bakatari Community, which shares boundary with Ogun State.
This was disclosed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Adewale Osifeso, in a statement.
Tribune Online gathered the operatives, led by the Commander, CSP Olusola Aremu, moved the area on stop-and-search after intelligence gathering.
As they were performing their routine duty, an approaching Bajaj motorcycle rider was noticed making a sudden u-turn from afar, fleeing on seeing the police operatives.
The PPRO said that his move raised the operatives’ suspicion, which made them pursue the fleeing suspect.
In order to escape arrest, the suspect reportedly veered into a nearby forest through a pathway with his motorcycle.
Osifeso added that in the process, a sack he was carrying on his motorcycle fell off the back.
When the operatives checked the sack to see what it contained, it was discovered that it was an AK-47 rifle with breech number 353913.
“Comprehensive investigations are ongoing, not only to apprehend the suspect but crack his criminal network and supply chain,” the PPRO stated further.
He said that the state Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, enjoined indigenes and residents of the state to partner with the police by sharing credible and timely information that would curb criminality and birth a peaceful state.
