It is a recurring paradox in Nigeria that a particular ethnic group or section beats the drums of war to deprive and deny others of their constitutional rights. The nomination of Mr Olatokunbo Ajasin as the director representing Ondo State on Niger-Delta Development Commission(NDDC) Board is necessary to encourage openness, transparency and accountability in the Board..
In the NDDC Act 2000, it is not specified that a member of the Board should on necessity be an indigene of an oil-producing local government. It is therefore that worrisome that the Senate Screening Committee on NDDC did not approve the nomination on that basis. The committee should revisit t the confirmation process and make a recourse to the precedence.
The NDDC Act does not stipulate that its directorship is a local government chieftaincy or family inheritance. Mr Ajasin has the experience, and is eminently qualified to represent the state. He will turn the placid stream of neglect, deprivation and denials into a new day of achievable dreams that will surprise the doubting Thomases.
