Ondo: Driver dragged to Court over attempt to rape septuagenarian

A 29-year-old driver, Bolaji Fawi, has been dragged before an Akure Magistrate Court over an alleged attempt to rape a 76-year-old woman, in Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West local government area of the State.

The driver who was standing trial on a two-count charge of attempted rape and sexual assault, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The  Police prosecutor, Inspector Folashade Adeyemi, told the court that Fawi committed the offences at about 3:45 am on February 13, 2024, at Oke-Odunwa Street, Ondo town.

He explained that the defendant broke into the apartment of the septuagenarian, in the middle of the night, to forcefully have sexual intercourse with her.

According to him, the noise of the septuagenarian attracted some of the neighbours who rushed to the scene only to find the accused and rescue the old woman from the defendant.

He said the neighbors, however, handed the driver to the police

According to the prosecutor, the defendant also assaulted the victim by causing her internal injury, but the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Defence Counsel, O. Adedire urged the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.

Magistrate Adekunle Ogunmoyela granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million and adjourned to March 14, 2024, for hearing.
