Before the term “Yahoo boys” was attached to youths who went into cybercrime, it was actually created to serve a good purpose. “Yahoo” started at Stanford University. It was created as a directory guide to other website. The world “YAHOO” is a acronym for “Yet Another Hierarchically officious oracle”
The illicit business, mostly perpetrated by young men and sometimes women, is an offshoot of the so-called ‘419’ business of the 1980s and 1990s. Yahoo boys have been called many names over the years, from Yahoo boys to Yahoo plus to G-boys. We are not oblivious to the fact that these people live around us; some are friends to these people while some are in a relationship with these people.
The trend looks like a saving grace to youths looking for a quick mean to make money but it isn’t. From 2017 till now, there have been cases of young girls killed by Yahoo boys for rituals. There were times whereby young ladies were kidnapped, killed and dismembered by yahoo boys because they need their body parts. At some point, girls’ pants and pads were used for rituals. That time, those doing it were hiding in plain sight but now, you can easily identify them by just taking a stroll. There are various ways to identify them. You can identify them by the way they dress, their hairstyle, and other ways.
These so called G-boys take so much pride in what they do to the extent that they post it on social media knowing that an organisation has been put in place to arrest those in the act.
I really don’t blame them because even officials that should arrest them take bribes from them. Corruption has eaten deep into our system due to government’s inability to curb cybercrime. The G-boys are laying a bad foundation for the youths. Most of them now think that engaging in this act is a good thing and not a crime. They are hiding under the belief that since government can’t provide jobs for them, they will find other means so they engage in illegal activities under the pretense of sourcing for livelihoods.
This activity has made Nigeria not credible to other nations and they see us as fraudsters who want to steal their money and resources.
At this point the only way to end this menace is through thorough and proper enlightenment of the youths on the effects of these social vices on their lives and their future.
