The Lagos State government, on Wednesday, shut down Ojodu Grammar School, Ikeja where a trailer rammed into students on Tuesday, killing three and injuring several others.
By the closure, students will remain at home for the Christmas and New Year holidays and be expected back in school for the second term academic session in January.
The students were early in the morning protesting the tragic incident around the school neighbourhood and particularly at the nearby office of the Federal Road Safety Commission whose officers were allegedly fingered to be pursuing the driver of the crashed truck.
The state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, announced the closure at the premises of the school after assessing the situation and held meeting with the leadership of the school and some parents of students who came around to find out the correct situation of the incident.
The commissioner said all the students would continue with their first term examination as a make-up exercise when the schools resume generally in January.
She said the students are done with the classwork for the term and only writing their first term exam when the incident happened and asking them to go home would not have a significant effect on their studies.
While she did not disclose the actual number of students who died in the accident and those injured, she said such information would be supplied in the official statement of the state government to be issued by 12:00noon which was not made available to newsmen even as at 3.45 pm when filling in this report.
She, however, noted that those injured would be moved from private to government hospitals for proper medical attention.
The chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area, Mr Olusegun Odumbaku, and the representative of Ikeja 2 Constituency in the state House of Assemby, Mr Adedamola Kazeem, were both around at the time the commissioner was briefing newsmen.
The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mrs Lola Akande, also visited the school shortly thereafter.
She described the incident as tragic and unfortunate and sympathised with the families of the late students and wished the injured ones a quick recovery.
Meanwhile, tension which was high after the incident on Tuesday and also early in the morning on Wednesday has doused in the school and its neighbourhood.
Some parents, who earlier released their children to come to school came later to take them back home for fear of hoodlums possibly turning the incident into an uncontrollable one.
Many of the school teachers, however, were not happy about what they called falsehood they said some sections of the media organisations especially the bloggers were spreading about the incident, particulary as regards casualty figures.
They said only three students died so far through the accident but it was surprising to read some media reports claiming 12, 13, 17 or more that died.
They said such reports apart from heightening the tension would not do the society any good.
