The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State Branch, has lauded the immense contributions of Sir Kesington Adebutu, Alhaji Adebola Adegunwa, and Asiwaju SK Onafowokan for investing in quality healthcare service delivery in the state.
The State Chairman of the Association, Dr Luqman Ogunjimi, disclosed this at a press conference held on Wednesday at the NMA House in Abeokuta, to mark the 2025 Physicians’ Week, themed “Healthcare as a Value Chain: Building Efficiency from Policy to Patient.”
Ogunjimi said the donations of an Eye Clinic and Diabetic Centre by Adebutu, a world-class trauma centre by Adegunwa, and a new physiotherapy building by Onafowokan to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, as part of their effort to support the government in improving the health outcome of the people.
The NMA Chairman, therefore, called on other well-meaning Ogun State indigenes to contribute their quotas as well.
Ogunjimi called on the federal and state governments to improve health infrastructure and, more importantly, the welfare and working conditions of doctors.
He noted that the step would help in addressing the issue of brain drain and would further strengthen the nation’s healthcare delivery system.
Ogunjimi appreciated his colleagues across the state for their steadfastness and commitment to service despite manpower shortages and challenging work environments.
He stated that despite limited staff strength, doctors at the State Hospital, Ijaye-Abeokuta, and the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, have continued to record remarkable progress and positive patient outcomes.
“Our members have remained steadfast and dedicated in all health facilities across the state. Despite manpower shortages, they continue to deliver quality healthcare services and uphold the ethics of the medical profession,” he said.
The association commended the leadership of the Permanent Secretaries of Ministries of Health and Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Kayode Oladehinde and Dr. Nike Elemide, for maintaining high standards of service delivery.
The NMA Ogun Chairman expressed gratitude to the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his administration’s investment in the state’s health insurance scheme and the revitalization of the 250-bed Specialist Hospital in Abeokuta.
However, he urged the government to sustain and expand these efforts to ensure lasting improvements in healthcare access and outcomes.
The NMA Chairman highlighted that this year’s celebration focuses on physicians’ contributions to healthcare policy implementation and patient care, emphasizing the need for collaboration among all stakeholders in the health value chain.
He announced that lectures would be delivered during the week by key medical professionals, including Dr. Kehinde Fatungase, Executive Secretary of OGASACA, and Dr. Ibikunle Ogundele, Deputy CMAC of OOUTH, Sagamu.
Ogunjimi identified multiple taxation on private medical practitioners, delayed pensions for doctors, poor infrastructure, and the growing issue of quackery in the medical profession as some of the challenges being confronted by doctors in the state.
Dr. Ogunjimi concluded by reaffirming the association’s commitment to upholding medical ethics, promoting public health, and working with the government and private institutions to build a resilient healthcare system.
“Let us continue to work together, government, private institutions, and citizens to build a healthcare system that truly serves all,” he said.
