As Ogun State and other global communities observe the World Environment Day 2020, the Ogun State government has harped on the need for a clean environment in the state.
The Special Assistant to Governor Dapo Abiodun on youth and sports, Olamide Lawal, who gave the charge, also urged youths in the state to be at the vanguard of a clean environment.
Tribune Online reports that the World Environment Day is celebrated every June 5 and it is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Celebrate Biodiversity”.
Lawal advised youths to desist from polluting the environment with several activities including open defecation and wrongful disposal of waste, adding that the advantages of a clean environment are numerous.
He said that the protection of the environment is the duty of all, adding that more responsibility for a clean environment rests on the youth and that they must take the matters of clean environment serious.
He said: “Environment is key to our existence as humans. Therefore, Ogun youths are encouraged to be environmental ambassadors.
“Through unclean environments, we have seen the outbreak of diseases that have ravaged communities and killed some. As the proverbial statement goes, cleanliness is next to Godliness. It is, therefore, important to always keep a clean environment.”
