NYSC Trust Fund to tackle rising youth unemployment — Senator Adaramodu

Chairman, Senate Committee on Youth Development and Community Engagement, Senator Yemi Adaramodu has said the NYSC Trust Fund when passed into law would help reduce unemployment and cybercrime among youths.

He stated this when members of the Senate Committee paid a courtesy visit on inspection of facilities to the
NYSC Oyo State Permanent Orientation camp, Iseyin on Saturday.

Adaramodu said the fund would enable it to equip Corps members with adequate skills to be employers of labour when approved.

He said, “The NYSC trust fund which is outside the pipeline right now, as the National Assembly has done the needful. So it is going to be transmitted to the Presidency very soon.

“So when that comes into effect, it will definitely engage the young adults, especially those that are serving and have just finished the NYSC.

“Our legislative agenda for the year will also help, not only what i said about the NYSC trust fund, but we are making sure that school syllabuses conform with the realities of the day. So we don’t have graduates that will not be functional, but the functional graduates.

“So the NYSC trust fund bill has scaled through all the principles of the legislature.”

On his part, the Oyo state NYSC coordinator, Mr Odoba Abel Oche appreciated the efforts of the Senate Committee on Youth Development and Community Engagement.

“The bill principally is to eliminate unemployment among graduates and youths. The SAED programme is a trending programme that keeps Corps members busy during their service year.

“Many youths have become self-employed and employers of labour through this SAED programme. Therefore, they are no longer roaming on the streets.

“So this bill is to provide a soft landing for them in terms of financing and funding of their programme. So through this bill, they are contributing their quota to the accelerated development of the Nigerian economy.”

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to embrace the SAED programme, saying, “We want Nigerians to support this initiative to quell youth restiveness and reduce reliance on government for jobs after school.

“Embrace this programme and leverage on iso that all graduates and youths are empowered in different skills.”

Members of the Senate Committee on Youth Development and Community Engagement present during the inspection were Senator Salisu Shuaib Afolabi and Senator Aminu Iya Abbas.
