The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Monday, says it has commenced the harvest of its 60 hectares rice farm in Saminaka, Shanga Local Government Area(LGA) Kebbi State, Nigeria.
It said its farm settlements across the country were being enhanced especially with supply of equipment and other necessary inputs.
The NYSC Director General (DG), Brigadier General, Shuaibu Ibrahim made the disclosure recently at a media chat held in Abuja.
He said the move is jeered towards harnessing the scheme’s revenue generation potential through reinvigorating its various ventures.
According to him, the scheme’s farms, including the mega ones in the FCT, Bauchi, Kebbi and Oyo States, will contribute to the Federal Government’s efforts towards ensuring food security.
Also, he said this will further accord Corps members with key training.
His words: ”We are working towards harnessing our revenue generation potential through the reinvigoration of the various NYSC ventures.
“Presently, we are harvesting rice in our sixty-hectare rice farm in Saminaka, Shanga LGA of Kebbi State.”
In another development, Ibrahim stated that the various youth empowerment programmes initiative of the Federal Government (FG) will help create job opportunities and also promote economic development
He made the commendation while addressing the 2020 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1A Corps members at the new NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Okada, Edo State.
The DG who commended the initiatives noted that the establishment of the Seventy-Five Billion Naira Nigerian Youth Investment Fund (NYIF), the Presidential Youth Empowerment Scheme (P-YES), and the National Young Farmers’ Scheme (NYFS), amongst others would go a long way improving the country’s economy.
While urging corps members to embrace the various initiatives, said the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme is also aimed at equipping corps members with their desired skills and link them with funding sources to enable them to establish their dream businesses.
“Embrace the unique opportunities of Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme of the NYSC Scheme to become job and wealth creators,” he said.
