EZE Israel Kanu and Ugoeze Sally, parents of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, have rejected some of the conditions attached to the bail grated their son by a Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday.
Eze and Ugoeze Kanu told newsmen in Umuahia, on Tuesday, in reaction to the news of his bail, that the conditions were “too stringent and awkward.”
Rather, they urged the Federal Government to release their son unconditionally, saying the conditions were pointers to the unwillingness of the government to let their son off the hook.
The traditional ruler and his wife, who addressed newsmen at their palace in Isiama-Afaraukwu community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, said it was unheard of that “in an internal matter, a person standing trial should have a surety who is a foreigner.”
According to them, the bail conditions were obvious signs that the Federal Government was not willing to let go of his son.
The traditional ruler said: “It has never happened anywhere in the world that a person standing trial for an internal matter would be asked to procure a foreigner as surety. From where do they expect those sureties to bring the hundreds of millions of naira the judge has stipulated?”
He assured that his son, Nnamdi, would remain in Nigeria to face his trial if granted bail, stressing that the stringent bail conditions were uncalled for.
The senior Kanu said although the family was happy that their son had been granted bail, the conditions attached to his release from prison had cast a question mark on the sincerity of the government to release him.
He urged Ndigbo to rally round his son until he regains his freedom.
On her part, Kanu’s mother said even after her son might have been regained his freedom, she would not encourage him to back out of the struggle for the actualisation of Biafra, because of his ordeal.
On whether she would discourage Nnamdi Kanu from going on with the struggle for Buafra, she said: “Of course, he will carry on. No retreat, no surrender. Biafra should be actualised.”
