The Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, Mr Joseph Tegbe has explained the significance of Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms.
He emphasised that these reforms were aimed at addressing deeper issues within a flawed fiscal system and to lay the foundation for a more modern and efficient economy.
Tegbe pointed out that Nigeria’s fiscal challenges stemmed not from a lack of wealth but from structural weaknesses, characterised by an overreliance on volatile oil revenues and a fragmented system disconnected from both economic productivity and its citizens.
He highlighted how taxation had failed to be regarded as a civic duty or an economic stabiliser, leading to outcomes such as poor fiscal planning and chronic deficits.

“Key goals include reconnecting the economy and the state, modernising tax administration through digital compliance and standardised processes, and enhancing predictability for investors and businesses.
“By establishing a transparent tax system, the reforms seek to rebuild the fiscal social contract and foster accountability between citizens and the government,” he said.
Tegbe drew parallels with successful fiscal developments in countries like South Korea, Singapore, and Rwanda, which achieved growth through disciplined taxation and strong institutional frameworks.
He argued that the Nigerian Tax Acts 2025 were aligned with this global trend, focusing on simplifying tax rules and broadening participation to create a more predictable and sustainable fiscal environment.
Overall, the reforms are positioned not simply as mechanisms for raising funds but as foundational tools for promoting long-term economic stability and growth.
