A group of three Nigerian researchers has come up with two technology tools to ensure and guarantee the integrity of academic work and materials across higher institutions in the world.
The three individuals namely, James Duru, Moses Adebayo and Damilare Ogunleye said they worked on the application identified as AI Guard and Cite Guard to address the growing concerns globally on the integrity of academic materials in view of the Artificial Intelligence-assisted applications.
According to a statement jointly signed by the trio, the tools were designed to bridge the gap in the academics especially in the areas of authenticity and adhering to proper citation practices in the higher institutions.
While acknowledging the positive impacts the introduction of AI is having in the academic environment, they argued that the new technologies would ensure that students works and research are original and devoid of cheating.
The statement reads, “Although AI-driven application provides significant benefits in the academic space particularly in the area of research, students without due care tend to engage AI-powered applications to conduct their research and the implication is that lecturers are exposed
to significant challenges concerning the accurate attribution of sources in student submissions.
“We are introducing AI Guard Application, a program designed to address the growing concerns surrounding academic integrity, particularly in relation to AI-assisted cheating and research citation management.
“As educational institutions increasingly face challenges posed by advanced AI tools that facilitate dishonest practices amongst students, there is a pressing need for effective solutions that can help maintain the integrity of academic work.”
Giving the workability of the two technology tools, the statement noted that, ” the AI Guard is an offline comprehensive tool designed to allow users to edit, format,
and convert text documents into various image formats. AI Guard supports loading and
saving text from different file formats such as `.docx` and `.pdf`, provides rich text editing options, and includes features for inserting and resizing images within the text. The goal is to encourage faculties to adopt uploading their assessments such as tests and examination questions in form of a reduced quality but highly visible images on their
various learning platforms; this would hinder students attempt to adopt AI OCR tool to
extract questions correctly and seek answers using other AI or tutorial platforms.
” The Cite Guard is an offline tool designed to help users efficiently verify citations in
academic and research documents. It automates the process of detecting missing or uncited references based on popular citation styles (APA, Chicago, and Harvard). The
application allows users to load documents, analyze the text for correct citations, and
generate reports detailing missing or uncited references.”
They added, ” The programs Cite Guard and AI Guard are a proactive reaction to the increasing worries
about academic integrity in the AI era. These technologies provide a thorough method
for ensuring that student work is authentic by tackling both citation management and AI-
assisted cheating.
” AI Guard and Cite Guard are crucial tools for preserving the highest standards of academic integrity in contemporary education. In the end, they shall raise the legitimacy of academic accomplishments by enabling educators to address the issues of AI misuse while cultivating an atmosphere of moral inquiry and learning. These tools would establish standard practice for preserving academic integrity at a time like this.”
