Nigerian swimmers who participated in the just-concluded CANA Zone 2 Swimming competition in Dakar, Senegal, placed second on the overall medals table, an officials said on Saturday.

Felix Simire, Media Officer, Lagos State Aquatic Association (LSAA), said in a statement that the country’s representatives gave good account of themselves in the three-day championships.

The statement added that the host country, Senegal, won the tournament, while Nigeria, Mali, Cote D’voire and Burkina Faso followed respectively.

At the end of the three-day championships, Team Nigeria won 10 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals for a total of 35.

“The female team from Nigeria, however, won more than 75 per cent of the total medals which earned them the best female team award.

“Ifeanyichukwu Nmor who won the 50m butterfly received an award for the best performance in the male category, while team Nigeria mixed medley relay are the record holders of the 4x100m,’’ it said.

The statement noted that every member of Team Nigeria won at least a medal which saw them on every event’s medals table.

The President, Swimming and Lifesaving Federation of Senegal, Dr Mohamme Diop, who is also the Vice-President of CANA, showered praises on Team Nigeria for coming second.

He said that Nigeria’s achievement came in spite of the fact that other countries were able to train in countries such as France and the U.S.

Diop noted that Team Nigeria which trained at home added colour to the CANA Zone 2 Swimming Championships.

The statement also said that Team Nigeria was coached by Emmanuel Emefuna and Sunday Tilije under the supervision of the Chairman, Technical Swimming Committee of Nigeria, Steve Onyeacholam.
