Niger spends N1.697bn on pension —DG

Published by

The Director General, Niger State Pension Board, Alhaji Usman T. Ahmed,  has said that the board has  so far spent over N1.69 billion for retirees and the delay in the payment of Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) was due to its suspension by the immediate past government in the state.

The DG, stated this  while briefing newsmen in Minna , the state capital,  saying that “the present administration is up to date in the monthly payment of pension and gratuities but inherited  a liability enhancement system, with no proper records, CPS and old pension scheme as well as its transition period of both the state and local government employees.

He attributed it to  a rotten system with a liability of N2.06 billion for only old pension scheme decried of lack of adequate funds to take care of pensioners  and  the entire debt at a goal hence the  need  to pay in batches.

Ahmed stated further that the first batch witnessed the release of N630 million for 549 beneficiaries,  while the second batch has N491 million for 404 beneficiaries, adding that the state governor,  Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello has again directed the release of N576 million for a Head Of Service  and  eight retired permanent secretaries at a total of N1,697,000 spent,  from the Federal government’s bail out to the state.

He noted that the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) till date valued at the sum of N7.6 billion for 3,880 beneficiaries after valuation and now awaiting their payment , stressing that the delay was caused  due to its suspension because of the  contentious  issues behind its implementation by the immediate past Muazu Babangida Aliyu led  administration  in the state.

He further disclosed that the present leadership was doing everything possible within the ambit of the law  to right the  wrongs of the past  and the then deep corruption allegedly going on in the system hence the  upgrading of  its ICT so as to curb the consistent corruption going on in the board.

Ahmed however expressed satisfaction over the state government’s release of N12 million to the board to ensure proper equipment and upgrading of the entire system in line with the required standard for effective and efficient service delivery.
