NIESV president warns against unauthorised claims

The president of the Nigerian Institution officer Estate Surveyors and Values (NIESV), Mr Victor Alonge, has warned against unauthorised claims to valuation expertise.

The president gave the warning during the Annual ValuersAssembly, themed: “Valuation as a Tool for Revamping the Economy: The Role of Estate Surveyors and Valuers”  held in Abuja.

He pointed out that valuation is a fundamental aspect of the profession, adding that unauthorised claims will not be accepted.

This year’s assembly brought together estate surveyors from across the country, key stakeholders including the Economic Finance Crimes Commission (EFCC),  Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC),  Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and other relevant agencies, who also gave their goodwill messages at the event.

Alonge, who also commended the board for its commitment to holding the assembly annually, highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue and feedback to enhance valuation practices.

He deemed unauthorised claims to valuation expertise as illegal and harmful to the economy.

He expressed hope that the assembly will reinforce the professional stance and foster collaboration with relevant authorities to advance the field of valuation in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Minister of Housing Dangiwa, assured the institution that all agencies under his ministry would remain actively engaged.

He affirmed that the 2024 theme was highly relevant and acknowledged the critical role of the profession in housing delivery, urban planning development, and preventing building collapses through facility management expertise.

He emphasised that misuse of buildings could lead to collapses and highlighted that estate surveyors should lead the way in instituting a whistleblower policy to regulate compliance in these areas.

Dangiwa also underscored the need for knowledge sharing and collaboration to address these challenges effectively.

The 2024 Valuers Assembly also featured Elder Felix Ohiwerei, as the keynote speaker, delivering an insightful presentation on “Leading with Integrity: The Intersection of Ethics, Personal Growth, and Corporate Success.”

Other notable speakers included Chudi Ubosi,  who discussed “Valuation Impact on seized Properties Before Sales by Government Agencies,” and Dr. Mrs. Anaetoh Justina, who spoke on “Insurance Valuation and Market Reality: Benchmarking with Inflation.”

The event also included two engaging panel discussions—one on “Compensation Valuation Template in Current Reality (Statutory and Ethics)” and another on “Expository on the Green Book and Ethics,” both followed by a lively question-and-answer session.
