A Non-Governmental Organisation, Dr Rhoda Makinde Initiative (DROMI) has distributed food packs containing varieties of raw food items to 5,000 widows and nursing mothers in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The food distribution project tagged ‘Let the Widows Smile’ is part of the activities to commemorate the just concluded World Food Day 2021, as the initiative’s had in penultimate week distributed food packs to women at the Internally Displaced Persons Camp (IDP) in Abuja to commemorate the 2021 World Food Day.
Speaking, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of DROMI, Rhoda Makinde emphasised the importance of food in the lives of people, especially the widows who are facing series of societal challenges.
According to her, “This food distribution to widows is an idea of my husband and I because we believe widows should always be remembered and that is one of the reasons my husband and I are doing this through DROMI today.
“A typical widow in our society today is faced with numerous challenges like feeding, self-reliance and so on. We, therefore, intend to ensure that with the distribution of this food and clothing materials, feeding will be the last issue on their mind.
“DROMI is an organisation that focuses on women’s development and their economic empowerment. The NGO is also working towards achieving sustainable development through deliberate actions that promote the welfare of women and children, by giving them equal access to opportunities and empowerment to achieve the best for themselves.”
One of the beneficiaries, Dorcas Akinwande, expressed her delight at the gesture by DROMI, saying, “life has not been easy as a widow but I thank God for what DROMI has done to put a smile on my face. This will go a long way in feeding me and my three children.”
