The Osun Independent National Electoral Commission (OSIEC) on Wednesday hinted that the next local government elections in the State will be a presidential system as against the parliamentary system had in 2017.
The Chairman of the Commission, Otunba Olusegun Oladitan who made this known at a-day retreat for management staff of the Commission in Osogbo, stated that,
According to him, “the coming elections will be presidential and we shall be having two ballot papers as against one had in 2017. The State Assembly has enacted laws to accommodate the change and the commission shall start working on existing legislations.”
Otunba Oladitan explained that, before, the local government administration in the State was the parliamentary system before the state House Of Assembly amended its legislation.
“You cannot blame the Assembly members since the whole States in the country are operating presidential system and Osun must not be an aberration.
Speaking on the retreat, the Commission Chairman said, the programme was organised for the commission members and its management staff to awaken them to their responsibilities before, during and after the forthcoming counsellorship and local government elections in the state.
He added that the retreat was also organised for the Commission Members and the Management Staff to have a robust service delivery and promote efficiency in the Osun Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC).”
“The retreat is designed to awaken the Commission Members and the Management Staff to their responsibilities and ginger them to effectively perform their roles”.
” It could also be described as a panacea to have an efficient and effective Election Management Body (EMB)”, he stressed.
The Chairman who posited that the focus of OSIEC is to have free, fair and credible Local Government Elections in the State, affirmed that this could only be achieved where the Commission Members, Management Staff and other categories of staff are fully aware of their responsibilities.
He however enjoined the Commissioners and other Staff present at the occasion to attach strong importance to the retreat saying, “this will lend credence to our determination to perform our assignments creditably.”
