NBA urges Niger gov to address water scarcity

An appeal has been made to the Niger state government to take urgent action to tackle the problems of water scarcity in Minna, the state capital, and its environs.

The Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association Niger State, Barr. Waziri Mohammed, made the call in an interview with journalists shortly after a meeting of the association held at the Minna High Court complex on Friday.

According to him, the scarcity of water had hit Minna, the state capital, and its environs in recent times, thereby rendering residents in search of water even at midnight, hence the need for the government to take proactive measures to address the issue.

He said the NBA, as part of its resolutions at the meeting, also commends the effort of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for the steps taken so far in giving Minna township road a facelift, adding that the new road network project will improve the socio-economic status of the state.

The chairman of the state branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) also used the forum to call on both the federal and state governments to constitute a consumer protection commission so as to check the alarming hike in the prices of food items in the markets, pointing out that the hike had caused devastating effects on the less fortunate in society.

On the issue of the removal of fuel subsidies and the power outages being experienced nationwide, particularly in Niger State, Barr. Waziri Mohammed appealed to the state government to impress it on the management of AEDC to ensure normalcy in the supply of electricity to its customers.

In another development, an electoral committee to conduct the 2024–2025 elections into various offices of the association has been inaugurated.

Speaking with the newsmen shortly after the inauguration, the chairman of the electoral committee, Barr.El Shiru disclosed that arrangements have been concluded for a successful, fair and acceptable election.

He said that very soon the electoral committee will come out with the names of the contestants.

Part of the activities at the meeting included the commissioning of a common room and a convenience apartment for members of the association donated by the Ministry of Justice under the leadership of the State Chief Judge, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdul Malik.
