Patients in the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) have lamented inadequate services as the consultant doctors take over the medical activities of the University of Ilorin teaching hospital.
It is recalled that the management of the UITH decided to use the services of the consultant doctors in the teaching hospital as resident doctors commenced nationwide strike action on Monday in which the UITH chapter of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) had joined.
A cross-section of patients, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune during a visit to the hospital on the second day of the strike action expressed grief, stress and pain they allegedly encountered saying that services of the consultants could not cope with a high number of patients.
The people urged the government and stakeholders involved to address the matters to ensure quick resolution of the doctors’ demands towards the resumption of medical services.
At the emergency unit of the hospital, only one consultant doctor was on duty with an assisting nurse, a situation in which the patients complained was inadequate for smooth medical response to patients on emergency.
A relation of one of the patients in the hospital, Madam Aduke Ibrahim, said that many patients had to leave when there were no required medical services.
“No medical attention is being given to anyone who can’t come to the hospital as early as 7 am due to few consultant doctors available on duty. While some people can still make it to meet doctors regardless of when they come to the hospital, that means that they must be influential or know someone who works here. Anyone who comes later beyond 10 am will not be attended to or either referred to another hospital,” she said.
However, a patient, who sought anonymity commended the consultant doctors on duty for trying their best to respond to patients even in the face of inadequacies.
The patient also appealed to the government to address the demands of the striking doctors to ensure quick resumption of duty.
