The authorities of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri have denied the report making the rounds that the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) doctors had replaced the striking residents medical doctors at the hospital.
The Public Relations Officer of FMC, Owerri, Dr. Jacintha Achonu, while reacting to the issue told Sunday Tribune in Owerri on Saturday that the NYSC could not do the work of the residents medical doctors in the hospital.
The PRO, who described the information as “blatant lies”, maintained that the Consultants and the medical officials had been doing their best in attending to the patients in the hospital.
On the report that an eye patient claimed that he was earlier on booked for surgery which was done by the NYSC doctors, the PRO said that such information was purely a lie that would never hold any water and as such never existed.
Reacting to the effects of the strike on the Institution, the PRO said that the strike is actually affecting the operations of the hospital.
Dr. Achonu acknowledged the fact that the strike is telling much on the consultants and medical officials as they spend much time in attending to patients in the hospital.
She said: “it will now take like four hours to attend to patients by the Consultants when in the normal circumstances it would take one hour or less to attend to patients.”
She said that FMC remained the only medica institution in Imo State that provided adequate primary and secondary medical services to people from across the communities and local government areas in the state.
