NADDC trains new assessors in auto industry

Published by

The National Automotive Design and Development Council has trained Assessors for the implementation of standards for improved service delivery in the Auto sector.

The training is aimed to close the skills gap that exists in the Automotive industry in Nigeria.

Speaking at the Weekend in Abuja during the training of over 30 Assessors drawn from the Six Geopolitical zones in the country, the Director General of NADDC, Mr Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin said it is part of the Council’s efforts to boost capacity in the industry.

He explained that “we need more learners to be trained so that the numbers of vehicles we are using on the road will be well managed and well maintained.

“We have so many training centers available now which calls for the need for more mechanics and more skill development in the auto industry”.

Represented by the Director, Industrial Infrastructure, Dr. Nua O. Omisanya, the DG stated that the advent of new innovations like the CNG and Electric vehicles have further necessitated the need for a trained workforce.

“These innovations have come on board, electric vehicles and CNG. So it is important for us to be able to build capacity and sustain the industry.

“Therefore, we need more Assessors, and for us to do that, we have been hosting this training program here. We have trained 15 Assessors before. We believe by the time we train another 30, which we are doing today, we will be able to increase the numbers of Assessors and we will be able to meet up the need or the skills gap in the auto industry”.

He noted that the aim of the training is to be able to access and train the learners for competency and quality assurance. “While they are on the job, they will be able to perform their duties very well.

“If you are a mechanic, you have to be taught how to do your job in the standardized way. It should not be try and error, It will be based on standards and based on the curriculum that has been developed” he stated.

On his part, the Lead Facilitator of the training, Olubode Daniel Majugagbe said
“this training is a step in the right direction, this framework tend to address standards in the entire practice, not just to standardize it, but to do it in line with international best practices.

“So, there is a formal standard now for anybody that want to train towards this qualifications. And by so doing, whoever is trained is trained according to the standard and is expected to practice in line with the standard.

“It will no longer be a one off training like it used to be. There will now be opportunity for progression, depending on the level you are able to achieve at a particular time” he stated.

It is hoped that the Assessors will impact the Auto sector, improving service delivery in the industry.
