A professor of educational management at the Ekiti State University (EKSU) Ado-Ekiti, Babatope Oyewole has lamented the increasing moral decadence in universities across the country, saying this has contributed to the negative perspective of the institutions.
Delivering the 59th inaugural lecture of the university titled, “Supervising the Supervisors: A Rebirth of University Academic Excellence” Oyewole noted that the lecturers most especially the senior lecturers must show an example in ensuring academic excellence in the institutions.
He pointed out that government should do its own part by placing a high priority on the welfare of academic staff across the Nigerian universities, which he said would guarantee innovative ideas, a high sense of responsibility and commitment.
The professor of educational management said, ” The moral decadence among some universities academic staff which has contributed to the negative perception of the quality of teaching personnel within the university systems has to be urgently addressed.
“The members of academic staff should exhibit better commitment in their discharge of duties in the areas of teaching, research and community service while government should improve on the welfare packages of academic staff in the Nigerian universities.”
While emphasising the need for clear cut supervision to maintain standards and quality assurance in the system, he urged authorities of universities to engage only qualified staff both in character and learning.
“As a matter of fact, only first-class graduates should be recruited as graduate assistants by the universities, this will help to reward hard work and promote academic excellence,” he said.
Oyewole advising the Nigeria University Commission (NUC), said, “they should objectively perform their external supervisory role especially in the accreditation of academic programmes and also advice the government to improve their responsibilities in terms of improved funding of university in the country.”
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edward Olanipekun agreed with the lecturer that a lot needs to be done to improve the education institutions in the country, adding that all efforts should be geared towards achieving the feat.
