AS Nigerians mark the nineteen years of uninterrupted democracy, the State Council of traditional Prime Ministers has called on President
Muhammadu Buhari to be more proactive in tackling myriads of problems threatening the unity and peace of the Nigerian nation.
This was contained in a resolution jointly signed by the President of the Council, Chief Anthony Enukeme and its Secretary, Chief Joe Nwegwu
at Neni, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State and made available to newsmen, shortly after the 7’0 clock broadcast by
President Mohammadu Buhari on his achievement recorded so far in his three years Administration.
According to the Council, Nigeria at present is witnessing numerous challenges such as senseless killings by Fulani herdsmen, high inflation rate, abuse of fundamental human rights, flagrant abuse of court orders, tribalism and nepotism, marginalization of some sections of the country among others.
The Council called on the Federal Government to rise to the occasion and find a lasting solution to the problems.
They equally re-emphasized the need for diversification of the economy and restructuring of the country to give room for equity, fairness, mutual respect, healthy regional integration and competition, rule of law, the sanctity of human lives and respect for fundamental rights.
The Anambra State Council of traditional Prime ministers also in their congratulatory message to the State Government, extolled Governor Willie Obiano for his leadership qualities which has brought effective security of lives and property, mechanized agriculture, industrialization, effective and affordable health care system, education, prompt payment of workers’ salaries and pension to retirees, commerce and efficient administration of justice, and called on other governors to emulate him.
Also reacting on the day, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor who described democracy as the best form
of government, however, called on the Federal Government to be more serious in tackling the Fulani herdsmen that are killing innocent citizens across the country.
For the Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese, Right Reverend Alexander Ibezim Nigerians are yet to experience true democratic governance and
called on the Federal government to be more proactive in providing democracy dividends across the country.
The State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Comrade Jerry Nnubia in a telephone interview with our correspondent, noted that Nigerians should use the period to reflect on the concept and ideology of democracy which he observed is not in practice in the country as
the voices of the masses could not be listened to by the leaders and representatives, praying God to give Nigerian leaders sense of justice
to maintain an ideal democratic system that would be beneficial to all citizens.
Comrade Nnubia, called on the Federal government to do its best in ensuring that the people are listened to, with emphasis on restructuring which the citizens are clamoring for, saying that if the federal government accepts true federalism which will be ushered into the country by restructuring, the country’s indivisibility would be strengthened.
Contributing, the Member Representing Oyi State Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Mrs Vivian Okadigbo, also in a telephone chat harped on the need for people to secure their voters card in order to express their power to elect the representatives of their choice during the next year’s general elections, and ensure more functional and people oriented governance.
For the President Awka Development Union Women’s Wing, Mrs Oge Ekweozor, Nigeria has nothing to celebrate, as the phenomena has remained and grows dormant and un-functional since the country’s independence in 1960.
