Though the Oke-Ogun region of Oyo State is described as one of the richest due to its considerable mineral deposits and huge land mass, the zone lacks many things, including access to medical care in spite of its natural endowments. Yejide Gbenga-Ogundare, reports that in a bid to fill the vacuum, Evangelist Dairo Missionary started the construction of an eye clinic but the project has stalled due to lack of fund and is in need of aid from well-meaning individuals.
Oke-Ogun zone of Oyo state is one of the biggest with a huge land mass that is mainly agrarian and a melting point of cultures being home to many Fulani settlements as well as farmers from other tribes. It can be described as a border zone as it shares boundary with some states in Nigeria; Niger, Kwara, Ogun and Osun states as well as a West African country; Niger Republic.
But for the zone to be effective for food production, there is a need for it to enjoy basic amenities that will ensure the people do not have difficulties or need to migrate to the urban communities. But this is however not the case as there is still a dearth of adequate amenities, including effective healthcare and facilities in that zone.
Part of what is missing in the zone is a standard eye clinic which makes it difficult for the people to take care of their sight. This serves as a major challenge as a man without good sight cannot attain his potential. Indeed, a popular saying states that the eyes are the light of the body.
And to fill this vacuum, individuals are putting up personal efforts to come to the aid of the people. A part of that effort is the Evangelist Dairo Missionary Eye Clinic and Hospital (EDMEC HS) in Saki; a medical organisation which aims to render medical care to all and sundry irrespective of tribe, race or religion affiliation
Speaking on the project, the national coordinator of EDMEC HS, Evangelist Kolawole Oladayo Dairo said, “we are followers of Jesus Christ who desire to show His love and care for those living in Oke-Ogun and West Africa in the diaspora, our passion is born out of the zeal to render quality healthcare all in the name of Christ. The plight of Oke Ogun people in terms of lack of a standard eye hospital is legendary. The area has been battered, assaulted, insulted and degraded.
We are calling the attention to the poor status of health infrastructure as regards the eye clinic in Oke-Ogun, if adequate assistance is granted to EDMEC HS, it will not only generate employment for unemployed youths in Oyo state,” he stated.
As laudable as the effort is, it has suffered a setback and the mission is seeking for donations and intervention in order to enable them to complete the project and open the facility for the use of the people. The mission is calling on well-meaning people in Oyo state to come to the aid of the clinic and help the rural folks battling with eye diseases so that they won’t have to travel to long distances for treatment as many have to go to Benin Republic and other African countries for treatment.
They are calling on people to visit the clinic to see what is on the ground so they can understand the importance of the project. For financial assistance, the mission can be contacted on 07069572560.
