Minister charges community leaders to assist security forces to end insecurity

Determined to unending increasing cases of insecurity in the country, Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Dingyadi, at the weekend pleaded with community leaders and Nigerians, in general, to cooperate with the security agencies in their efforts at fighting bandits and other elements threatening peace and security of the nation.

The minister made the plea in Abuja during an interactive session with correspondents on the efforts being made by the Federal Government to end insurgency activities in the country.

He disclosed that the plea became necessary as security checks had confirmed that most criminal activities were being perpetrated by people living in contiguous communities, using unpatriotic people in the same communities as agents that aid them with intelligence in carrying out their nefarious activities.

According to him, “policing infrastructure is receiving attention through the recent deployment of drones by the police, for surveillance of vulnerable locations, and the deployment of additional Explosive Ordinance Devices (EODs) to detect bombs and other covert measures in certain locations of the country.

“We need intelligence to guide our operations and we need the support of the general public as we are improving on our intelligence, equipment and well-kitted officers in the course of their operations.”

The minister added that “the police are also re-strategising its kinetic and non-kinetic operations to crush all forms of security challenges in the country.”

According to him, “Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has strengthened kinetic operations against mindless persons or groups orchestrating violence against Nigerians.”

Reacting to the recent suggestion of individuals bearing arms in Nigeria for self-defence by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ado Doguwa, the minister said that would not be the right solution to the nation’s state of insecurity.

He pointed out that presently, the number of illegal arms and ammunition in the country was part of the causes of insecurity the nation was currently facing.

Speaking on the implementation of the new salary increment for the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, he explained that the government was fast-tracking the increment, adding that the police management team was already working with other relevant agencies of the federal government in collaboration on with the Ministry of Finance to commence the implementation of the new increment.
