At least 51 ministries, departments and agencies (MDA) of the Federal Government have proposed a cumulative budget of N37,849,295,025 for the preservation of the Nigerian environment.
Nigerian Tribune investigation revealed that 51 agencies of the government including the Nigerian Army proposed to the sum to the legislature in the National Assembly for various environmental issues.
Budgets by the MDAs covered the following areas such as wildlife conservation, erosion and flood control, tree planting, industrial pollution prevention and control and water pollution, prevention and control.
29 agencies proposed the sum of N29.2bn on erosion and flood control capture on code 23040102 in their respective budget charges under preservation of the environment.
Nigerian Tribune can state that the sum of N1.6bn was earmarked for wildlife by some other agencies of government including the State House which proposed to spend N57 million on wildlife conservation.
Another six MDAs proposed N2.8 billion for industrial pollution prevention and control while another three agencies proposed N2.9 billion for expenditure in the 2022 appropriation bill for “water pollution, prevention and control.”
Eight of these MDAs sought legislative approval for the cumulative sum of N1.2bn to plant trees across the nation while two agencies wanted approval for N1.2bn for general preservation of the environment within their domain.
On flood control, the largest proposal came from the lead ministry on environment which sought the legislative nod to spend N20.9 billion on the preservation of the environment for which it would expend the sum of N17.7 billion on erosion and flood control, N2.4bn on industrial pollution, prevention and control while the balance N777.2 million would be used to plant trees across the country.
Closest to this was the Ministry of Water Resources that budgeted N2.8bn strictly for water pollution, prevention and control.
The Anambra and Imo River Basin Development Authority captured on 0252037001 in its budget proposal to the twin chambers of the National Assembly plans to use N2.8 billion for the control of erosion and flood in that area.
The Federal Psychiatrc Hospital Calabar also earmarked N86 million to erosion and flood control.
For the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), its request was for the approval of N342.9 million to manage industrial pollution.
