The Rivers State Government has insisted that it began the implementation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive on full financial autonomy for the nation’s Judiciary last year when the directive was given.Â
Addressing workers in the state on Saturday at this year’s rally to mark the May Day celebration, Tammy Danagogo, Secretary the State Government (SSG) said members of the Judiciary Staff Union (JUSUN) who are currently on industrial action across the country to demand the implementation of the financial autonomy should engage the leadership of the Judiciary to confirm the implementation.
Danagogo who represented the State Governor, Nyesom Wike, at the May Day rally at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt stated: “In Rivers State, the state government has accepted the implementation of full financial autonomy for the Judiciary. We have have written to them; go and confirm.”
The SSG also clarified the position on the issue of the about 500 teachers of demonstration schools of the state-owned tertiary institutions who are being five years salary by the state government, saying that the teachers were not the staff of the State Government but of the various institutions running the demonstration schools.
He explained the state government’s position thus: “Every worker engaged by Rivers State Government passes through a due process of employment by the Civil Service Commission. Universities all over the world are allowed to run businesses. Those are not government workers. It will be incongruous, inappropriate, without due process to think that government should adopt workers universities employed to run their businesses.”
He stated that organised Labour is a partner with the government in achieving set goals and advised it to constructively criticise the government, noting that the state government was not to blame for the spreading banditry across the country since the issue of security is on the exclusive list.
Earlier in her address, the chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Rivers State, Beatrice Itubo, commended the state government for all its labour friendly policies in the state that have assured a cordial labour/government relationship in the state.
