Mawlid Nabiyy

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has urged all citizens to use the occasion of the Eid-el-Mawlid to reflect on the virtues of the Prophet Muhammad by showing love and understanding for fellow citizens while exhibiting patience, honesty, sincerity, kindness and generosity in all their undertakings.

In a message to Muslims commemorating the birthday of Prophet Mohammad (SAW) which was marked as a public holiday on Thursday, the president urged all citizens and youths in particular to shun all negative tendencies as manifested in the recent hijacking of peaceful protests to loot and destroy public and private property.

The president, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant to on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, also reiterated his earlier promise to bring police personnel responsible for misconduct as well as the looters to justice.

Oyo State governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, congratulated Muslims in the state on the occasion of this year’s celebration of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, popularly known as the Mawlid Nabiyy.

A statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted him as congratulating the Muslim faithful in the state and Nigeria on witnessing this year’s Eidul-Mawlid.

The governor charged Muslims to  imbibe the spirit of love, patience, and perseverance, which according to him, are virtues of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), stating that this would guarantee peace and security in the state and the country as a whole.

Also, the Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, felicitated the Muslim community on the commemoration of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, saying the occasion again calls for deep reflection among the human race.

In a statement on Thursday, the governor said: “The birth of Prophet Muhammad and his rise to prophethood some 40 years after changed the course of human history and civilisation forever. The commemoration of the day serves as another reminder to everyone about how best to lead an impactful life for the good of humanity.”

Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, called for sober reflection and self-evaluation by all with a view to knowing how well they have related with their Creator and fellow human beings during the last one year and make amends where necessary.

The governor, in his message to the people of the state to mark the celebration, said: “Bauchi State and our country need peace more than ever before. You are all living witnesses of the present demonstration and youth restiveness across the country against the excesses of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police.

“As you are aware, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) lived a simple but exemplary life. Besides the divine revelations which he received and passed on to his followers, he also preached peace, honesty, patience, generosity, humility , sincerely , love for one another and the fear of God. It is these virtues that people, irrespective of their religious inclinations, are enjoined to imbibe and to put into practice.”

Akinola

Similarly, the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji Dawud Akinola, charged Nigerians to focus on activities that promote peace, unity and development and do away with those that fan ember of discord and disunity as the nation goes through a critical moment in its existence.

Akinola, in an Eidul-Mawlid message to Muslims and Nigerians in general, said: “As Muslims, our activities must revolve round the promotion of peace, unity and harmonious relationship as no section of the country can do it all alone. There is strength in unity.

“The birth and life of Prophet Mohammad teach humility, resilience, strong will and determination to succeed against odds. Nigerians should draw salient lessons from the life and times of the Prophet and use them to see the country through this trying period so that we can come out stronger as a nation.”

He called on youths to be civil in demanding for their rights and show understanding as the government looks into their demands at any given time.

Akinola said the country had been battling social and economic problems for decades and these had culminated in general unemployment and poverty.

According to him, righting the wrongs in the system would take efforts and time and as such, it behoves youths to exercise patience and restraint.

He admonished the political class to expedite action in addressing issues raised by youths during the EndSARS protest so as to quickly return the country to the path of peace and progress.

Alhaji Akinola commiserated with those who lost their loved ones in the course of the protest and prayed Allah to grant them the strength to go on.

Kwara Speaker

In the same vein, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Honourable Yakubu Danladi Salihu, implored youths and the entire people of the state to imbibe the virtues and character of Prophet Muhammad so as to be able to lead meaningful and impactful lives.

The lawmaker made this plea in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Ibrahim Sheriff, on the commemoration of the 1442 Mawlid Nabiyy.

Danladi Salihu said: “The time to reflect on our character is now. We must exhibit good deeds and be morally upright if we must attain sustainable peace and progress in our personal and public lives.

“The ugly incidents that occurred in our dear state recently are, to say the least, alien to any religious ideal and, indeed, contravenes the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), informing the need for renewed call on us all to live by the virtues and values of the Holy Prophet.”

He congratulated the Muslim ummah on the grace of witnessing yet another Mawlid Nabiyy and expressed the hope that people would benefit from the blessings and teachings of the celebration.

MMPN

In a message to commemorate the occasion, the Oyo State chapter of the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) appealed to government at all levels to put in place realistic programmes that would address poverty in the land.

In a statement in Ibadan, the state chairman of the group, Alhaji Ridwan Fasasi, said although the aftermath of the EndSARS protest where COVID-19 palliative warehouses were looted could not be justified, the multitudes of people involved and the way it happened in the affected states confirmed the high rate of poverty in the country.

He noted that it was high time wealth attached to political offices was reviewed as such is not only unfair to the masses but it also constitutes a drain to the resources of the nation.

Alhaji Fasasi urged Nigerian leaders to emulate the virtues of Prophet Muhammad which include honesty, selfless service, love, kindness, equality, fairness and God-consciousness and make the country be in the comity of developed nations.
