Man shot by policeman in Osogbo died at UNIOSUN teaching hospital

A 30-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Saheed Olabomi, allegedly shot by an anti-riot policeman in Osogbo, Osun State capital was on Friday night confirmed dead by the Authorities of the Osun State University Of Technology, Osogbo.

The deceased who gave up the ghost around 8.15 pm of the day, was said to have been deposited at the morgue of the teaching hospital.

Saheed has been in a coma and on a life support machine at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital since he was being hit by a stray bullet of the police last Tuesday and his family had been calling on the state government to intervene in ensuring that, adequate medical attention was given to him.

Confirming his death, the Public Relations Officer, Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Mr Ayodele Adeyemo, said Olabomi died yesterday after surgery.

He, however, sympathised with the family of the deceased, describing the death as unfortunate.

It will be recalled that the state governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola on Wednesday paid a visit to the victim of the gunshot injuries who was reportedly hit by a stray bullet after a police officer allegedly shot to disperse people at a traffic scene around Oke-Onitea area, Osogbo in the afternoon of the day when the incident happened.

As a result of this, the victim was immediately rushed to the Intensive Care Unit, Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo making the governor visit the members of the family of the victim as part of efforts to show the Administration’s concern over the ugly incident.

This is even as the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to further ensure the protection of lives and property of the citizens in the state.

While assessing the state of the health of the victim, Governor Oyetola expressed delight at the fact that the patient has been responding to treatment.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Works and Transport, Mr Hussein Olatoke Olaniyan; Special Adviser on Security, Mrs Abiodun Ige, in the company of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olawale Olokode, the Governor said no effort would be spared to ensure adequate treatment for the victim as the government was ready to foot the medical bills.

While conducting the government’s delegation round the facilities dedicated to save the life of the patient, the Chief Medical Director, Uniosun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Prof. Peter Babatunde Olaitan, said the patient was in a stable condition.

He said necessary surgery had been carried out on the patient to stabilise his health situation, saying, “thank God, he is responding to treatment.”

The hospital’s CMD noted that other operations would still be carried out on the patient to permanently stabilise and restore his health.

Speaking on what necessitated the sympathy visit, Oyetola said the visit became necessary to demonstrate the government’s sensitivity to citizens’ welfare.

“The unfortunate incident that happened on Tuesday which involved the shooting of one citizen of the State was seen as a very serious development.

“We have gone to visit and sympathise with the relatives of the victim, starting from Aragbiji of Iragbiji, who is an uncle to the victim and also to other members of the family of the victim, particularly his father.

“We have been praying to God that the victim should survive this and come back to life. The Commissioner of Police has assured us that necessary measures will be taken to avoid a reoccurrence. He has also been directed to get to the root of the incident. The government will foot the medical bills,” Oyetola added.

Meanwhile, Kusamotu Olabomi, father of the shot person by a mobile policeman in Osogbo, Osun state capital last Tuesday called on the police authorities to unveil the identity of the policeman that shot at his son.

Kusamotu who called for the arrest of the perpetrator of the inhuman act while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday, cried for justice and warned against carpeting the matter.

According to him, “My son, Saheed must not die. He is still in a coma, his condition is very serious. He is still in pain and on life support at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he was rushed to after the incident.”

The father of the victim who hinted that the state commissioner of police had assured that, the hospital bill of his son would be offset by the state government in a meeting, said, the representative of the governor was also in attendance.

He however warned that the life of his son must not be toyed with and requested first-class medical treatment for the resuscitation of his son’s life.

Kusamotu who revealed that his son’s wife had been in a devastating condition since the incident happened, insisted that “I value my son’s life for it is precious than gold to me.”
