Members of Region 9 and 10, International Association of Lions Club in Benin City, the Edo State capital, were recently engaged in a two-day humanitarian activities as the District 404-A1 Governor (DG), Anogwi Anyanwu, visited the regions.
Speaking on the relevance of District’s visit, the Chairperson of Region 10, Galvin Osaretin Osayande, said the visit was part of the District’s Need Assessments (DNA) of clubs under Anyanwu’s watch.
Osayande who received the District Governor in company of other Lion leaders, added that the visit was an opportunity for members of both regions to engage with the Anyanwu in order to have interaction in a convivial atmosphere.
Speaking in the same vein, the Region 9 Chairperson, Ambrose Ohonba, informed that the District Governor will brainstorm with members on the progress recorded in the two Regions.
Ohonba, who was represented by the Zone 9B Chairperson of the Club, Dr. Bala Anegbe, stressed that proper articulation on the problems and prospects of the clubs, as well as advice on the way forward are expected to be part of the visit.
Inaugurating 13 Plastic Receptacles and Waste Bins at the Edo State Specialist Hospital during the visit, the District Governor stated that the aim is to encourage the people to properly dispose off their reusable plastic cans in order to avoid environmental hazards.
He maintained that plastic cans, when not properly disposed, clogged water planes and flood paths, adding that since they are non-biodegradable materials, they remained in the clogged space for a long time, causing environmental problems.
At Uselu market where he also commissioned the Signboard donated by the Ugbowo New Ugbowo Lions Club, Anyanwu commended the efforts of members of the club for creating awareness on environmental issues, noting that the Signboard would be a continuous reminder to traders and buyers on the need to keep the market environment healthy at all times.
At the Interactive Session with Lions which was held at the Benin Recreation Club in GRA, the District Governor addressed various issues and challenges being faced by the clubs, including the issue of club strengthening, membership reappraisal and issues on leadership dynamics.
He further remarked that leadership training of members is a continuous development strategy which, according to him, will also help them to be good citizens and improve their chosen career paths.
Appreciating the District Governor for the visit, John Atafo, Chevron Monarch, thanked him for making the bifurcation of the clubs possible, noting that it has brought accelerated leadership strides to leaders in the District.
In their separate commendations, Mrs Blessing Ehigiator, Director, Environmental Health Services, Peter Isele, Hon.Eghosa Oni-Edigin, as well as some Uselu market women, thanked the Lions Club for its involvement in humanitarian services, particularly the clubs’ contributions in restoring environmental health and sanity in the ecosystem.
Highpoint of the two-day ceremony was the presentation of a bronze plaque to the District Governor as a memento from the Regions, just as the newly-chartered Omega Leos Club of the Benin Centennial Lions Club also presented the Benin native beads to the District Governor.
