Lawmaker lauds Abia govt’s efforts to end street trading in Umuahia, Aba

Mr Munachim Alozie, the Chairman, Committee on Trade and Investments, Abia House of Assembly, has commended state government’s efforts to relocate street traders in Umuahia and Aba to designated markets in the two cities.

Alozie, who gave the commendation in an interview with journalists in Umuahia on Thursday, said removing traders from the streets would help to ensure public safety and proper statistical planning in the state.

He said that the move to rid the state of street trading would not only add value to the aesthetics of the environment but also ensure orderliness in the affected cities.

Alozie further said that the demolition of illegal structures at the Enyimba area of the Ariaria Market, Aba, should be extended to Ngwa Road Market, Aba as well as Akanu Ibiam-Bank Road and Co-operative axis in Umuahia.

According to the legislator, who is the Chief Whip of the 7th Assembly, it is unacceptable to allow every area to be turned into the market.

He explained that such a government’s action would enhance proper planning and make business statistical data handy for swift government action.

“The internally generated revenue of the state will increase when the traders comply with government’s directives,” Alozie said.

He called on all the relevant revenue-generating agencies to assist in the area of documentation of traders.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state government recently started the demolition of illegal structures in some markets as part of its efforts to rid the cities of street trading.
