The North West University (NWU), Kano, has expelled 41 students, while 18 others were rusticated for involvement in examination malpractices during the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic year.
The announcement was made public through a circular dated January 3, 2025, signed by Jafaru Sule Muhammad, Head of the Directorate of Examinations, Admissions, and Records, on behalf of the Registrar. A copy of the circular was made available to the press in Kano.
The decision was finalized by the university’s Senate during its 56th regular meeting, held on December 30, 2024.
The circular also confirmed that the expelled and rusticated students were found guilty of violating the institution’s examination policies. In addition to the expulsions and rustications, the Senate issued written warnings to 42 students for their involvement in examination misconduct, while two students were completely exonerated after thorough investigations.

The implicated students represented a cross-section of faculties, including Basic Medical Science, Science, Computing, Education, Social and Management Sciences, and Humanities.
The statement emphasized that these measures underscore the university’s commitment to upholding academic integrity and deterring unethical practices. It further stated the importance of adhering to examination guidelines to maintain the credibility of the institution’s academic standards.
Following this action, the university community has been urged to view this as a necessary step in fostering a culture of discipline and accountability, ensuring that future occurrences of such malpractices are minimized. The school authority reminded students of the severe consequences of breaching the institution’s policies and the importance of maintaining academic excellence through honest efforts.
