Kano assembly seeks urgent relief for Bichi rainstorm victims

Published by

The Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) has called on the state government to immediately provide relief materials and other assistance to victims of the recent rainstorm in Bichi Local Government Area, that claimed eight lives and destroyed houses and property worth millions of naira.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the member representing Bichi constituency, Lawan Shehu, during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore.

Presenting the motion, Shehu said the rainstorm, which occurred last Thursday, left eight people dead and caused widespread destruction across several communities in Bichi.

He informed the house that he, alongside the chairman of the local government area, visited the affected communities to sympathise with the victims and assess the extent of the damage.

According to the lawmaker, the member representing Bichi federal constituency provided N2 million to each bereaved family, while victims who lost both relatives and property received N10 million in assistance.

Shehu appealed to the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene by providing emergency relief materials and other forms of support to help the affected residents recover from the disaster.

Following deliberations, lawmakers unanimously adopted the motion and urged the government to expedite action in delivering the needed assistance to the victims.

In a separate resolution, the assembly adopted a motion urging the state government to establish two modern skills acquisition centres in Tudun Fulani and Zango wards of Ungogo Local Government Area.

The motion, sponsored by the member representing Ungogo constituency, Saad Aminu, stated that the proposed centres will equip the area’s growing youth population with vocational and entrepreneurial skills to promote self-reliance and reduce unemployment.

Aminu argued that the need for the centres had become more pressing following the recent arrest of more than 20 youths suspected of involvement in kidnapping, many of whom reportedly lacked formal education.

He added that the facilities will also serve young people from the neighbouring local government areas of Minjibir, Dala and Fagge. The motion was seconded by the Majority Leader and member representing Dala constituency, Lawan Hussaini.

The House also adopted motions calling for the upgrade and installation of modern medical facilities at Sabon Bakin Zuwa Hospital in Jakara, Kano Municipal Local Government Area, as well as the rehabilitation of roads in Makoda, Dawakin Kudu and Warawa local government areas.
