Journalists, lawyers and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have been denied access to the Federal High Court, Abuja for the trial of the self-acclaimed IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that there was the presence of heavily armed security personnel at the gate of the court and around the court, causing serious vehicular and human traffic.
All pleas for journalists to have access to the court were turned down by security personnel, comprising the police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the army.
The trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako had, on July 26, 2021 adjourned till this morning to commence trial of the secessionist agitator following the failure of the Federal Government to produce him in court on that day.
The trial judge held that the trial of Kanu could not proceed in his absence. Having been arrested and brought into the country, the judge insisted that he must physically be brought to court since he is now available to face his trial and urged the prosecution to ensure that Kanu be brought to court to witness his trial. The judge adjourned the matter till October 21.
Nnamdi Kanu is facing trial on charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony and sponsorship of unlawful organisation.
