Japan reports first coronavirus death, third outside mainland China

A Japanese woman in her 80s has died of the new coronavirus, the first confirmed fatality in Japan, the government said.

The government only found out that she had been infected with the coronavirus after her death, Health Minister Katsunobu Kato told a news conference.

The resident in Kanagawa prefecture near Tokyo had been hospitalized since February 1, Kato said.

The minister said he believed she got infected with the virus in Japan as she did not have a recent overseas travel history.

Two other people have died from the virus outside mainland China – one in Hong Kong and one in the Philippines.
