Jambalaya rice with proteins: A flavorful one-pot dish

Published by

Jambalaya is a popular Louisiana-inspired dish that combines rice, proteins, and spices, creating a flavorful and satisfying meal. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to cook jambalaya rice with proteins:

Ingredients:

•Uncooked long-grain rice

•Water or chicken broth

•Tablespoon vegetable oil

•Large onion, chopped

•Garlic, minced

•Bell pepper, chopped

•Boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces

•Smoked sausage (such as Andouille or kielbasa), sliced

•Cooked shrimp, peeled and remove veins

•Paprika

•Dried thyme

•Cayenne pepper (optional)

•Salt and pepper, to taste

Mixed vegetables (such as carrots, peas, and corn)

•Scallions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

Prepare the ingredients: Rinse the rice and set it aside. Chop the onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Cut the chicken and sausage into bite-sized pieces. Peel and remove vein from shrimp if using.

Heat the oil: In a large, heavy pot or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.

Sauté the aromatics: Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell pepper to the pot. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the proteins: Add the chicken and sausage to the pot. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

Add the spices and rice: Add the paprika, thyme, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir to combine. Add the rice and stir to coat the rice with the spice mixture.

Add the liquid: Add the water or chicken broth to the pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.

Add the shrimp and vegetables: Stir in the cooked shrimp and mixed vegetables. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the shrimp are pink and the vegetables are tender.

Serve: Serve the jambalaya hot, garnished with chopped scallions and a dash of hot sauce, if desired.
