Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu
An elder statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has officially declared his decision to quit partisan politics for the purpose of serving the people of Imo State.
At a press conference held Thursday in Owerri as part of the activities marking his 79th birthday scheduled to hold on September 4, 2021, Chief Iwuanyanwu said that the reason behind his decision was to pave way for the younger generation of leaders, whom he said he had brought up, to carry on.
He said: “At 79 years of age, I have passed the age. I have brought up many people, though I wanted to be president of Nigeria”.
Chief Iwuanyanwu added that from the beginning, he did not have the intention to go into politics until some Igbo people advised him to join.
He said that he eventually bowed to their pressure to join politics in 1978, adding that he had been into it since that year till date.
The business mogul disclosed he aspired for the office of president of the country thrice, but unfortunately, providence was not on his side.
The chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo Council of Elders said that he had no regrets in not becoming president, just as he expressed hope that one day an Igbo man would become Nigerian president in his lifetime.
He said that he could no longer vie for any other position in the country, but would use his period of retirement to offer advice to people and serve the people of the state.
Chief Iwuanyanwu used the forum to advise the younger generation of leaders to draw wisdom from his wealth of experience to enable them to struggle for a better Nigeria.
