In commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD), the National Council for Women Society (NCWS) is urging for greater representation of women in all governmental and societal levels.
During an advocacy visit on Thursday to the Cross River council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Calabar, the President of the NCWS, Rt Hon. Mrs. Marjorie Asuquo, emphasised this call.
She highlighted that the 2025 IWD, themed “Accelerate Action,” is a crucial opportunity for women to raise awareness about their struggles, referencing the Beijing Conference of 1995 as a significant event that spotlighted women’s issues globally.

She pointed out that, particularly in Africa, beyond the Beijing resolutions, there are pressing issues such as HIV and AIDS infections, human trafficking, forced marriage, property grabbing, and female genital mutilation that women face.
“These are all important concerns for us at NCWS, which is why we are urging those in power to expedite actions that support women’s rights and help combat poverty and health challenges, making the world a better place for everyone,” she stated.
Asuquo also stressed that their advocacy extends to the girl child, recognizing that they too will grow into women one day.
In addition, Comrade Archibong Bassey, the chairman of the Cross River NUJ council, noted the importance of protecting each other’s rights while also calling on the government to do its part.
She praised the progress being made under the state governor’s leadership, attributing it to the support of his wife.
Bassey reiterated the need for proactive measures towards achieving gender equity, encouraging women to keep breaking barriers and facilitating change.
