The foremost rights group in Nigeria, Campaign for Democracy (CD), has expressed great worries with the state of the nation concerning insecurity across the country, saying it had resolved to give President Muhammadu Buhari an ultimatum of six months to return Nigeria to her right path or resign from office.
CD gave this ultimatum in a communiqué titled: “Enough is Enough,” issued at the end of its extra ordinary national executive council meeting, held at Moro, Osun State during the burial ceremony of the pan- Yoruba socio- political group, Afenifere, Comrade Yinka Odumakin, husband of the immediate past president of CD, Dr Joe Okei- Odumakin.
The communiqué was jointly signed by the group’s deputy president, Deacon Bayo Obatugase and national general secretary, Pastor Ifeanyi Odili, respectively.
The rights group, while issuing the ultimatum, threatened that failure to comply, President Buhari would risk civil disobedience/passive resistance from Nigerian masses, even as it noted that the group members had been forbidden to sit back and watch the political class and ethnic bigots killing Nigerian citizens, annihilating the country basis of existence on the alter of partisan politics.
This was just as CD, while taken the decision, begged Nigerians to bear with it for its long silence, assuring that it had not abandoned the struggle for a better country neither did it go into comatose, adding that it only decided to give Nigerian politicians enough rope to pull in order not to give room to interruption of civil rule.
“Consequently, CD resolved to give President Buhari an ultimatum of six months to return Nigeria to her right path or quit, failure which, he risks civil disobedience/passive resistance from Nigerian masses. We have been forbidden to sit back and watch political class and ethnic bigots killing Nigerian citizens, annihilating our basis of existence on the Alter of partisan politics.
“CD appeals to Nigerians to bear with it as it has not abandoned the struggle for a better Nigeria neither did it go into comatose, only that we decided to give Nigerian politicians enough rope to pull in order not to give room to interruption of civil rule. We are not unaware that mass action and civil disobedience can cause a disruption of any government.
“For this reason, we have been so cautious in facing the Federal Government without purse or delay as we did in the military era,” the rights group said.
CD said the vote of no confidence on President Buhari was due to maladministration under his regime manifesting in “Insecurity across Nigeria, Ethnic chauvinism which is glaringly clear in all the federal political appointments, Oppression of certain ethnic nationalities and Fulanization of Nigeria by Fulani oligarchy, in which President Muhammadu Buhari belongs and Indifferent, uncaring and unresponsive attitude to the lives of Nigerians.”
Others are: “Mass poverty ravaging every home across Nigeria, High rate of petroleum prices and devaluation of the naira, and Above all, gross incompetence to give Nigerians the democracy of their dreams.”
“It is disheartening to note that an average Nigerian mass prefers Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha who we chased away to the elected President Muhammadu Buhari for rubbishing our collective struggles for a democratic Nigeria during military regimes of the two army generals,” CD sadly noted.
The group applauded some governors it said had taken the need and courage as well as bravery to set up regional security network in their respective states with a view to securing their people’s lives as killings of innocent citizens were on the increase across the country “since they can no longer leave the safety and security of their citizens in the hands of the Federal Government of Nigeria.”
CD, while commending the affected governors on the initiative, said it was in line with its belief that State Police was an imperative for true federalism in Nigeria, and the harbinger of a new era as well as a forerunner to restructuring of Nigerian nation.
The group said it was an understatement to say that the Buhari government had failed in its primary duty to secure its citizens, and, therefore, the need to gives kudos to, particularly South-West and South-East governors for their gallantries.
On the passing of Yinka Odumakin, CD consoled the wife, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, and counselled her on the need to take solace in the Lord who is the ultimate consoler as no one could do so except God, particularly when it involves losing a caring husband like the deceased.
CD said it quite agreed that “such loss can be painful, piercing, excruciating,” but had gotten no option than to “submit to the will of God for mankind, since we did not create ourselves, we came from the dust and the dust we must return.”
The group, however, said it remained “exceptionally thankful to God and it congratulated the family of the late Afenifere scribe who quietly died on his sick bed and not that he had his throat sliced by any of the terrorist groups like Boko Haram or the bandits who are ravaging Nigeria nation,” adding it was better to die honourably on a sick bed than to die unnatural death in the hands of the terrorists.
