The National Congress of Ohaji Youth (NACOY) in Imo has expressed frustration over the slow pace of work on the Umuapu section of the Owerri-Port Harcourt express road.
The project, awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has been moving at a snail’s pace, despite the worsening condition of the road.
According to NACOY, the contractor has shown a lack of urgency, and the remedial work done so far is inadequate. The group fears that if the road remains in its current state, the approaching rainy season will render it completely unusable, crippling transportation and business activities in the area.
NACOY is calling on the contractor to accelerate the work and for the NDDC to provide strict monitoring and enforcement of quality standards. The group has also demanded an urgent meeting with the NDDC, the contractor, and community representatives to address their concerns.
If their demands are not met, NACOY has vowed to mobilize peaceful protests to demand justice for their suffering people. The group says it will not stand idly by while their community suffers due to government neglect and contractor inefficiency.
