GOVERNORSHIP candidate of Lagos State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Jimi Agbaje, has assured Lagosians of his resolve to review the outrageous Land Use Charge put in place in the state earlier in the year, by the ruling All Progressives Congress government, if voted into office.
The PDP gubernatorial candidate also promised to revisit the issue of multiple taxations, assuring that he would reduce Consumption Tax and other intolerable taxes that were not only currently frustrating people but also driving good businesses away from the state.
It would be recalled that Agbaje is driving his campaign on freedom and total liberation for the people of Lagos State.
PDP standard bearer gave these promises on Monday in a statement made available to newsmen by his campaign office, saying he was poised to address those issues as no meaningful growth and robust economic activity would take place in an atmosphere of fear, intimidation, extortion and impractical tax policy.
“But this is unacceptable. Every lover of democracy and liberty must join hands with us to stop this drift because it is an ill wind. We know that there is a price for freedom. So, we are all in this struggle together: artisans, technocrats, traders, students, civil servants, politicians, professional teachers and everybody in Lagos State who genuinely wants freedom and a better tomorrow,” he said.
Agbaje criticised the unpopular 400 per cent increase in Land Use Charge, saying it was tantamount to reducing a hard-working house owner to a tenant due to the burden of paying outrageous tax every year on his or her property.
According to him, citizens have a right to a good life, unencumbered by unreceptive policies, assuring the people of Lagos of his commitment to their life and wellbeing.
Speaking further, the PDP chieftain queried the rationale behind unwarranted and repeated increases in taxes even when they were not justifiable, particularly for civil servants and low-income earners who bore the brunt rash policies.
“Currently, Lagos State is overburdened with all kinds of taxes. But I am very happy that many people, including members of the All Progressives Congress, APC are on this same page with us on this injustice.
“As things stand now, Lagos State charges the highest Pay As You Earn, PAYE tax and this is unacceptable,” he said.
“But the big question is: despite the high consumption tax, high PAYE Tax, the trillions that the state has received in the last couple of years, including the Land Use Charge, what have we achieved in terms of infrastructure and human capital development? Agbaje queried.
“It is an open secret that the bulk of what is collected as tax and other revenues in Lagos State is in the hands of a few. These so-called godfathers have not only impoverished the people, but they are also bent on their scheme which is now widely believed to be internal colonization.
While describing the situation as unacceptable, the PDP governorship candidate urged every lover of democracy and liberty to join hands to stop this drift, which he said was an ill wind.

Agbaje by his recent utterances has shown that he lacks direction knowledge of governance. He talks too much and painfully enough, he talks out of the pains of his past failures. He hasn’t done anything in governance and he is not on the side of the majority of Lagosians
