IBB distances self from post endorsing military rule

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has dissociated himself from a parody account on X, with the user name @General-Ibbro which recently made a post portraying Babangida as endorsing the virtues of military rule over democratic governance.

A statement by the media office of the former military ruler, Alhaji Mahmud Abdullahi made available to journalists on Sunday in Minna, he described the account which carries the picture of the former Nigerian leader and the coat of arms of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as dubious and not belonging to General Babangida.

The elder statesman thereby called on the general public to disregard the numerous blatant lies posted on the said account, while clarifying that the account and the contents has nothing to do with him .

Disclaiming the recent post on that account where the former president was supposedly saying that, Nigeria has the best years under military, the former president stated unequivocally that Nigeria’s democracy is resilient and has come to stay.

Babangida reechoed his belief that the era of military intervention in Nigeria’s politics is long gone.

The former leader added that he is proud that the Nigerian military has stood firmly behind multiple democratic governments since 1999, thus giving the country the longest run of civilian administration since independence.

He further advised media practitioners and social media users to be more discerning and make necessary confirmations before sharing messages attributed to former President Babangida on X or any social media platform.
