How Raheem Oluwasegun ‎turned youth potential into progress in Ogun‎

‎Leadership rooted in knowledge, discipline, and community service came to life in an Ogun State community through the work of Raheem Saheed Oluwasegun, a trained physicist and public servant whose youth leadership left a lasting imprint.

‎Raheem, who holds a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Lagos and a Bachelor’s degree from Lagos State University, where he graduated as the best student in his department, brought academic excellence and structure into grassroots leadership.

‎Alongside his professional role as a Scientific Officer in the Ogun State Civil Service, he served as Youth President of a community in Ogun State, at a time when youth disengagement, drug abuse, and declining academic performance were pressing concerns.

‎Drawing from years of experience as an academic tutor and education consultant, Raheem prioritised education as a tool for social change. He introduced free tutorial classes and mentorship programs aimed at improving students’ performance in Mathematics, Physics, and other core subjects.

‎To further encourage academic competitiveness and intellectual development, he organised quiz competitions among secondary school students within the community, helping to boost confidence and academic discipline.

‎‎Understanding the financial constraints faced by many families, he facilitated the provision of free WAEC and UTME forms for students in their terminal classes, increasing access to higher education opportunities.

‎Beyond academics, his administration confronted the growing challenge of drug abuse among youths. Through regular sensitisation programs and weekend orientation sessions, young people were educated on the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of responsible living.

‎These consistent engagements contributed to improved behavior, reduced involvement in harmful activities, and a renewed sense of purpose among teenagers and young adults in the community.

‎Raheem also leveraged sports as a unifying platform. As a former football captain and coach, he organized football tournaments and recreational activities that fostered teamwork, discipline, and peaceful coexistence among youths of different backgrounds.

‎The sporting events helped bridge ethnic and social divides, creating stronger bonds and reducing youth-related conflicts within the community.

‎‎His leadership style emphasized openness and accountability. Youths were encouraged to voice concerns, which were addressed through structured meetings with his executive members, ensuring inclusive decision-making.

‎The impact of these initiatives became evident in improved academic outcomes, increased tertiary institution admissions, and stronger youth participation in community development.

‎‎In recognition of his outstanding contributions, the Chairman of Ijebu-North Local Government formally commended Raheem for his dedication to youth development, academic advancement, moral reorientation, and community stability during his tenure.

‎Today, Raheem Saheed Oluwasegun’s record as Youth President stands as a compelling example of how professional expertise, academic excellence, and intentional grassroots leadership can drive meaningful and sustainable community transformation.
