From heated arguments on who is the best artiste, breakout of promising talents, to deserved recipients of awards and troll of celebrity gaffes, social media is always awash with happenings in the entertainment space and beyond.
As it is often the norm, the past week bore witness to some developments in the entertainment space and one issue that evoked varying opinions of critics and fans alike was the accusation against veteran singer and YBNL boss, Olamide.
Olamide took under the banner of his label artiste, Temmie Ovwasa, in 2016 but after four years, Ovwasa took to social media to express that her only achievement since teaming up with Olamide’s YBNL was four singles and four videos despite recording so many contents which were not released.
“I actually recorded 3 albums and multiple singles that were never dropped by YBNL for no reason and my shows were rejected by them making it hard for me to do anything. My voice may not be loud but I fit shout. You don’t give a person hope and snatch it from them.”
Opinions were divided on the saga as those who jumped to Olamide’s defence highlighted how Ovwasa had deteriorated in character. Since being exposed to music limelight in 2016, Ovwasa, some stated, had begun indulging in using substance, even became gay and was unapologetic about it.
Fans who empathised with Ovwasa pointed to preferential treatment on the part of Olamide given that someone like Fireboy joined much after her but has got more attention from the YBNL boss and dropped two albums in the space of two years.
Ovwasa, who dropped an album weeks after leaving YBNL entitled ‘E be like say them swear for me’, revealed that she has reconciled with Olamide and YBNL but observers insist that things won’t be the same again.
Away from Ovwasa, a nine-year-old Kenyan girl, Bridget Bema is being widely regarded as the latest internet sensation following the attention that greeted her skits on social media. Bema who is seen in some quarters as the incarnation of popular Nigerian comedienne, Emmanuella, presents herself as a confident, carefree, notorious and rebellious secondary school student who has no regard for rules.
Nigerians expressed on social media that hers is a character they can easily relate with and could not help but embrace her archetype.
While Bema was gaining traction on Twitter and Instagram, music superstars, Burna Boy and Wizkid were winning plaques at the revamped MOBO awards. The two artistes were crowned the Best International Act and Best African Act respectively as their wins reignited the battle for superiority among fans who often pit one against the other.
