High food prices: Nigerian farmers must move away from using hoes, cutlasses —Expert

Chief Executive Officer, Lukom Integrated Services Limited, Mr Lukman Komolafe has said the nation’s farmers must embrace advanced technology, mechanisation to boost food supply thereby making food affordable.

Komolafe made this known while addressing journalists in Ibadan on the present-day high food prices.

Kolawole said it was baffling that some farms still used crude tools like hoes, cutlasses to farm whereas the thing in developed countries was the use of tractors and other equipment that could make farming faster and easier.

He bemoaned the waste of manhours on tasks that could be completed in fewer hours if advanced tools are used.

To boost food production, Kolawole said the norm should be to embrace mechanisation from start till the end of the farming process.

In the same vein, he said there was need to reinvent agribusiness in Nigeria which will make food affordable for Nigerians.

He also admonished government at all levels to empower agricultural enterpreneurs to thrive and contribute to food security and rural development.

On its part, Komolafe said the Lukom Integrated Services Limited continued to identify underutilised land parcels suitable for agricultural purposes.

He said Lukom continued to leverage on innovative land management techniques and sustainable farming techniques to ensure lands are transformed into vibrant agro hubs.
