President of Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo Hall, Ibadan, Oyo State, Chief Olasunkanmi Henry Agbaje, has dissolved a six-year-old marriage between Aminat Tiamiyu and her husband, Lukman, after several adjournments for possible settlement had failed.

According to the plaintiff, Aminat, Lukman won her over from another man about six years ago and the union is  blessed with a child.

She told the Court that the reason for filing a divorce suit against her husband  was that he is irresponsible and beats her frequently.

While the court was listening to both parties, the boy whose custody the defendant was  fighting for started vomiting, an indication that the little boy was not in good health.

However, hearing continued.

“We’ve been separated for four years and I’ve been the only one responsible for the child’s welfare until two weeks ago when he started staying with him.

‘I appeal to the court to please tell him to return my child to me  in order to give him proper care.”

The defendant, Lukman, told the court that his wife  left his house for another man’s  since 2013.

“Recently, when my wife visited me with our child, I observed that his  body has been bathed  with hot water due to her carelessness.

“ I still took care of her not minding that she’s married to another man. I even gave her N50, 000 to start  a business and she bought a freezer. It is true that the child is with me. I want to take good care of him. I want to enroll my child in a private school; I’m not satisfied with the public school he attends now.”

Having heard from both parties for the last time, the court asked if there was any improvement in their relationship, but the plaintiff  insisted on a divorce.

The court’s president said since there was no objection from the defendant that the divorce is  granted on payment of no dowry.

“The custody of the child was awarded to the plaintiff for proper care and N3, 000  was to be given as the child’s feeding allowance per  month starting from January 2017. Both parties were advised to maintain peace while the   defendant was further asked to  take up the  responsibility of  the child’s health care and education,” he ruled.
