In a move to expand access to high quality primary medical care services to all Nigerians, a non-governmental organization – Health for Nigeria on Thursday kicked off one of its pilot project tagged ‘Nurse a school’ in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, where a sick bay was set up in a school and was equipped with medical tools.
Health for Nigeria, with the mission to mobilise a movement of highly motivated and promising health care professionals, expanding access to high quality primary medical care services to all Nigerians and creating a cadre of leaders to galvanise a healthcare movement in Nigeria, has dedicated its resources to developing the healthcare system in Nigeria with the project tagged ‘Nurse a School’.
As the first beneficiaries of this project, the students and management of Bashorun Ojoo high school, along Bodija-Ashi road in Ibadan, could not hide their excitement and appreciation to the kind gestures extended to them, as they joyfully received the representatives of the organization with songs and dance.
Speaking at the event, the Visionary and Chairman, board of directors of the organisation, Dr. Abimbola Akintade, who was represented by a member of the board of directors Mrs. Alero Ayida Otobo described the event as a significant big step. According to her, “to really elevate and improve the quality of the health sector in Nigeria, what we need is primary health care, not just big and tertiary hospitals.”
“This is the first school of thousands to benefit from a programme like this, which I believe will impact the whole of Nigeria. And not that Health for Nigeria has to do it all, we are raising the standards, putting the standard in place and what the standard should look like,” she added.
However, recognising the opportunity to have an impact on that particular community, Health for Nigeria decided to choose Bashorun Ojoo High school, along Bodija-Ashi road as a kickoff point for the ‘Nurse a school’ project. Speaking on this the Programmes Manager, Ademove Osho said: “We engaged with a few schools and here as well, we noticed that, not only did we get the best reception from this school, but we got the best opportunity for both the school and Health for Nigeria, as they gave us a space and their resources.”
The Principal of the school, Mrs. Olayiwola Iyabode talking on behalf of the school management appreciated the organization for their thoughtfulness and promised to ensure the facilities and equipments are managed judiciously. According to Mr. Bode Abodunde, the Human Resource Manger for Health for Nigeria, ‘Nurse a School’ project is expected to cut across several schools in south west, south east and the northern part of the country.
