Group extols FIIRO for constructing skills acquisition centre in Delta

A group under the auspices of the Academic Staff Unions of Research Institutions (ASURI) has commended the Federal Institute for Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO) for constructing a skills acquisition centre in Agbor, Delta State.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the Secretary General of ASURI, Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku said the training centre is an empowerment tool for youths developnent in the state.

“As a major stakeholder trade union in the Research and Development sector of the economy, we extol the positive development at the FIIRO”.

He explained that “as part of its advocacy for the enthronement of sanity in the Research and Development Institutes (RDIs) sector, the leadership of ASURI initiated the process of assessing the Research Institutes and Agencies within its jurisdictional scope by sending delegates to monitor and observe developments.

“It is pleasing to report that within 19 months of being in the saddle as the Chief Executive of FIIRO, Dr. (Mrs.) Jummai A. Tutuwa has performed excellently” he stated.

Ndubuaku said FIIRO in recently time is focusing on finding massive research projects for the development of the country’s economy.

The Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO) is a parastatal under the agency of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

FIIRO was the idea of an economic mission sent to Nigeria in 1953 by the World Bank. The mission’s observation was that industrial research activities in Nigeria were diffused and uncoordinated with no definite direction. Consequently, a decision was reached to set the Institute in 1956.

The Institute vision is to be the foremost centre for Science and Technology-based research and development for the industrialization and socio-economic advancement of the nation.
