One of the problems in Nigeria is that the masses are the ones doing some of the duties of the government, part of which is the provision of amenities in rural areas.
In advanced countries, it is the government that develops rural areas for their citizens to encourage people to spread from urban areas to the rural areas. This will allow for cities not to become overpopulated. But the reverse is the case here in Nigeria. Citizens are the ones developing the rural areas to meet the standard of civilisation.
Even after they have developed the rural areas, the government officials come up with levies and taxes for citizens to pay. For instance, imagine a community contributing money to buy a transformer in their area, and after they have paid for it, the electricity distributing company officials come to demand for certain amounts they must pay for using that transformer. At times, these officials would even cart away the wires and some other essential equipment.
All of these shouldn’t be happening in a country that has a government which has promised to make things easier for its citizens.
The government should please look into this and help make life comfortable for the citizens.
Marvelous Auda, Oyo State.
