In a bid to ensure that Gombe United FC performs well in the 2021/2022 professional football season, the state government has boosted the team with an allocation of N20m monthly and a brand new Tata luxury bus.
The gesture publicly handed over to the Club management by the State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya over the weekend was aimed at boosting the morale of the players and officials who returned to Nigeria top-flight football at the end of the last season.
The club had remained in the lower league for the past two seasons but its recent promotion to the premier league has excited the Government and supporters of the club.
The Governor also gave a marching order for the upward review of the monthly subvention of the club from N12 million to N20 million with immediate effect.
The Governor who presented the bus gift after the Savannah Scorpions walloped Super Pillars 4-0 in a friendly match at the Pantami Stadium on Saturday said the gesture was in appreciation of the club’s heroic outing at the just concluded 2020/2021 Nigerian National League (NNL) season.
During their NNL campaign, Gombe United lost only one match, drew seven, and won the remaining matches.
The Governor also told the management of the club to hire the best players from anywhere in the country as the government is ready to support the club to remain in the top league of the country.
According to Governor Yahaya, “You have done well for promoting the club back to the nation’s premier league against all odds. Gombe United has been a household name everywhere you go in the country. You’ve done your part by securing promotion to the premier league, now it is our turn to reciprocate the gesture”.
The Governor then paid tribute to the founding fathers of the club, particularly, Senator Haruna Garba, who was in attendance at the presentation ceremony.
He also showered encomiums on the management, technical crew, backroom staff, the players, and supporters of the club for a job well done.
Chairman of the Gombe State Sports Commission, Malam Hamza Adamu Soye, had earlier thanked the State Government for the support given to the club but solicited more financial support to be able to execute their premier league campaign successfully.
Dr. Larry Daniel, Chairman of the club, appreciated the support of Governor Inuwa Yahaya-led administration to the club especially the regular payment of players’ salaries.
He also thanked the Governor for the confidence reposed in him and the board members of the club to steer the affairs of the club and assured him of working assiduously in making the Savannah Scorpions title contenders.
